AFI Update from Interim Vice Chancellor Michael Riley

Dear Colleagues,

In July, a restructuring of the campus’ affiliated services placed the Campus Store, Housing Operations, and Dining Services under the Auxiliary Enterprises and Fiscal Innovation (AFI) umbrella, along with the Conference Center under construction as part of Merced 2020 Project.

The restructuring builds on a partnership between AFI and the Division of Student Affairs. AFI also is responsible for Transportation and Parking Services, and the Early Childhood Education Center. Our mandate is to operate AFI units in a financially self-supporting manner that provides convenient, user-friendly, customer-driven and cost-effective goods and services. The growth of those units is consistent with campus needs and ensures that the commitment to student life and residence education are financially supported to ensure their programmatic success.

As Associate Vice Chancellor of AFI, Alan Coker has been instrumental in this process. He has provided seasoned guidance and direction to both the university and to me as we’ve created a structure that supports our long-term goals of financial sustainability.

Alan has decided to move on from UC Merced to pursue other career opportunities. His final day is Oct. 15. Alan will use the remainder of his time here to help me and AFI leadership, along with many campus partners, develop a transition plan that maintains the stability, professionalism and user-friendliness of affiliated services while we prepare a search for his successor.

Update on AVC Financial Planning and Analysis Search

We brought to campus three excellent candidates for the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor of Financial Planning and Analysis. The last on-campus interview was held Sept. 20. Many thanks to those who participated in open forums with the candidates. Human Resources is compiling feedback from interview participants, and I aim to conclude the search process in early October.

We will share updates as they become available.

If you have any questions or feedback, please share via our Comment Box or by email at dofa@ucmerced.edu.

Thank you for your daily dedication to our students and our campus.

Sincerely,

Michael Riley, CPA

Interim Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer
